“For a long time, I had been looking at different universities abroad and heard England has a good reputation for higher-level education. 

The University of Plymouth caught my eye. Firstly, for its friendliness and openness of staff and secondly for its location within the city, which is perfect for studying and student life. 

Degrees are practically based and there is more of a personal approach to students than elsewhere in Europe. I soon realised England has the best choice of English-taught courses.”

So, why Plymouth?

“My course was the main reason I came to study in Plymouth. Originally I wanted to study Interior Design but a Skype interview with one of the tutors really changed my mind.

He showed me how students work together in one big open-space studio. 

Later, the course provided me with many opportunities to grow as a designer such as internships, workshops or competitions.”

Events, tours and summer school

“I took part in an International Summer School at Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China. 

We worked on a project about ‘Design in the 3D printing age’ but part of the trip was an excursion to a company who were making buildings from concrete using a 3D printer. We also enjoyed historical tours and a taste of traditional cuisine.

It’s exciting because there are lots of events at the University where I got to meet other international students, Erasmus students and some from around the world too.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t worry if your English isn’t perfect. 

In your first year join sports clubs and societies straight away, socialise, go to events and use every opportunity to make contacts for your future career or take part in a project. Be active.

Weekend fun

“I like the Japanese restaurant Koishii on Mayflower Street, for special occasions. 
However, the University’s on-campus Drake’s Café is a place where I go for lunch during a working day.” 

 “My free time is spent on nights out in the Student Union or on North Hill. On a Friday or Saturday I'm usually finishing off my coursework, going to The Hoe or the nearest beach on a Sunday.”

“Other highlights include The Hoe, the Barbican, Lipson Park, Royal William Yard, Kingsand, surfing in Newquay and hiking on Dartmoor.”

  • Aldi or Lidl are the most affordable shops in the city. 
  • Get a Totem card for discounts in Co-op and travelling by Megabus.
  • Bring a proper raincoat and some good waterproof shoes, and don’t forget an adaptor.
