Patients are more 'periodontal aware'. Achieving periodontal health for your patients is the foundation for good dental health and successful restorative dentistry in all practice settings. The overriding strength of the course is our emphasis on practical hands-on teaching to hone your surgical skills. Complex periodontal cases are demystified and enhanced-level skills in bone grafting and implant dentistry are gained as well as the fundamentals of higher-level restorative dentistry and occlusion. This course utilises methodical and evidence-based approaches, which enable you to take your learning back into practice, providing direct patient benefits and a more fulfilled working environment for you.

Year 1
In your first year, you learn key concepts underpinning the delivery of periodontal care, enabling you to develop a systematic understanding and knowledge of the subject including relevant basic sciences, diagnosis, treatment planning and nonsurgical treatment. You also learn about the influence of occlusion, splint therapy and orthodontics, endodontics and prosthodontics in relation to periodontology.

Foundations of Periodontology
This module covers key concepts underpinning the delivery of Periodontal care, enabling learners to develop their understanding and knowledge of the subject area. It also teaches rudimentary skills in subjects essential to continuing professional development and evidence-based care.
PID7012
Periodontology in Practice
This module covers further concepts underpinning the delivery of Periodontal care within the practice or specialist environment. It will enable learners to develop their understanding and knowledge of the subject area in relation to other areas of dentistry.
Year 2
In the second year you learn about the surgical management of bone loss due to periodontal disease, elective surgery to assist prosthodontic treatment and ridge preservation. You also learn about dental implants, hard and soft tissue grafting and implant-related surgical procedures on the sinus.

Periodontal Surgery and Introduction to Implants
This module focuses on the surgery relevant to periodontal disease and/or to provide assistance with multidisciplinary care options for dental patients.

Advanced Implantology
This module focuses on the planning, and delivery of implant-borne restorations under more complex conditions encountered in clinical dental practice.
Final year
In the final year, you will undertake an academic module to develop evidence-based dentistry skills including: clinical question formulation; evidence acquisition, appraisal and synthesis; clinical decision-making and critical thinking skills. You will design your own research question, relevant to your programme of study and conduct a rigorous evidence synthesis project. The successful completion of this module will equip you with evidence-based dentistry skills, allowing you to remain up-to-date and to critically evaluate new research.

Dental Programmes Masters Project

On this module, students will design, plan and undertake a review of the evidence relevant to their chosen field of study. Students will specify a research question, make methodological decisions and synthesise the available literature.

UK Government announcement on tuition fees
The UK Government has announced that a levy on tuition fee income in the region of 6% of an international student’s tuition fees may be introduced. If implemented, the University reserves the right to increase your tuition fees accordingly. The Government has made it clear that it has not officially decided on its stance and it is possible that the eventual levy amount or arrangements may differ from the initial proposal. Therefore, the University reserves the right to adjust tuition fees in accordance with the Government’s final position on this levy.

NHS Dental Postgraduate Bursary
Funding from the NHS via Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) is available to support dentists working in NHS roles within these ICB areas to undertake postgraduate training at the University of Plymouth.
These NHS-funded bursaries are intended to help develop the delivery of more advanced dental care across the South West.
A bursary of £5,000 per year may be awarded for the first two years only and can be used towards course fees for the following three-year part-time programmes:
MSc Endodontics ,
MSc Oral Surgery , MSc Periodontology and
MSc Restorative Dentistry .
Applications for the NHS bursary must be submitted by 31 October 2026 for courses starting in January 2027.
Eligibility criteria apply, and applicants should ensure they have reviewed the full
terms and conditions before applying. Interested applicants must complete the bursary application form using the link provided and submit a separate application to the University of Plymouth for the chosen course.
If successful, the NHS bursary funding will be paid directly to the University on the applicant’s behalf.

Entry requirements
As a graduate, you should be in practice (Dentistry) in the UK whilst undertaking the programme and hold full General Dental Council (GDC) registration as a dental practitioner. You should also have full professional indemnity and normally at least two years of clinical experience. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, subject to fulfilling the above requirements.
If you meet the above entry requirements you will be required to attend an interview.
