Our forward thinking degree will coach you to develop industrial products that perform, last and make a positive impact in the real world. You will learn through hands-on, project-based studio work, responding to live and industry-informed challenges that reflect how industrial products are designed and developed in real-world industrial contexts. Throughout the course, you will build strong digital design skills, working with simulation, digital fabrication and emerging AI-enabled tools, while developing the confidence to test, prototype and refine ideas. Sustainability is integral to the course, we will help you understand how industrial designers shape low-carbon products, circular systems and responsible material futures within contemporary industry.

Details

Year 1

You will establish core skills through practical studio projects focused on materials, making, digital design and sustainable thinking, alongside early exposure to engineering and manufacturing principles delivered with the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.

You will build technical depth and professional confidence, with interdisciplinary projects exploring high-value sectors such as advanced manufacturing, marine, defence and healthcare, supported by modules in business, innovation and operations delivered with the Plymouth Business School.

Final year

Complete a major individual project supported by research, professional practice and business-focused modules, enabling you to specialise and demonstrate leadership in sustainable and digital industrial design. You will graduate with a strong, industry-ready portfolio and the confidence to operate effectively within commercial and professional environments. By the end of the programme, you will have the technical fluency, business awareness and adaptability needed to succeed in fast changing, technology driven industrial product design careers.

3D Design Society

Our club specialises in celebrating the world of 3D design: from products to interiors to furniture. We hold fortnightly socials themed around design and design culture, from quiz nights to movie nights. We also host guest speakers and lecturers to talk about their design-related specialities and the paths that they have taken, pop-up shops, art shows and much more.

Tuition fee price changes

The Government has announced that tuition fees from Academic Year 28/29 onwards will be subject to automatic annual inflationary increases, which we believe will be at a similar rate to the recent annual increases to fees, and may continue to be inflation based. Access to HE Diploma

Pass an Access to HE Diploma in any subject, including GCSE English and Maths grade 4 or above or equivalent with at least 33 credits at Merit/Distinction.

T level

Merit in any subject, preferable in subject areas related to this programme such as Management and Administration, Craft and Design, Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing, Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing, or Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control. 

International Baccalaureate

26-30 overall to include 4 at in any subjects at Higher Level. English accepted within Higher Level = 4+ (A1) or 5 (A2/B) Standard Level = 5+ (A1) or 6 (A2/B).
