We play an active role in schools liaison, working with students of all ages to encourage understanding and participation in discovery and learning. We have supported several successful Nuffield Summer Science bursaries in recent years and every
September nearly a thousand A level and Key Stage 5 students visit our centre to 'get close to the microscopes'.
During these September visits, each group of students spends time discussing specimen preparation methods and examining samples in both the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. There is also the opportunity for a guided tour of the campus taking in science laboratories, the library, Students' Union and accommodation blocks.
“The students really enjoyed getting to see the equipment in action” and as a result of the visit “Our students are thinking of running a competition to see if any lower school students could guess that it was the foot of a ladybird” (Liskeard School, Cornwall, 2015)
In 2016, our A level and Key Stage 5 visits (covering biology, earth sciences and engineering / materials science) are being sponsored by the BioChemical Society through their Scientific Outreach Grant (Monday 12 September - Friday 23 September 2016), meaning that participating schools will be given images and other useful materials to take away with them.
If you are already booked in for your 2016 visit and require parking or have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact Pete Bond on +44 1752 584536 - or to register your interest in our 2017 visits, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
