Industrial solutions event #1

Past events

Tuesday 4 December – PMG Annual Christmas Lecture, Theatre 1, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth
PEMC supported this year’s PMG Annual Christmas lecture, featuring Dr Gertjan Vlieghe from the Bank of England. We welcomed over 100 delegates to our exhibition stand to get an update on PEMC’s activities and see examples of our new FIB-SEM’s capabilities. Remember, if you represent a Devon SME, you could get free access to the FIB-SEM to investigate the microstructure of your products and materials in 3D, thanks to the Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project.

Monday 12 November – The Heart of the South West LEP Annual Conference, Sandy Park, Exeter
The PMCP team attended this year’s HOTSW LEP annual conference at Sandy Park, Exeter on 12 November 2018 and their display of the new FIB-SEM's capability in terms of imaging, analysis and 3D attracted a lot of interest. It was great to be able to catch up with other business support providers, but to also meet new and discuss how our projects, including the Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project, can support industry in a complimentary manner.

Friday 8 November
The team joined colleagues from the University and South Devon College to showcase how Devon companies can benefit from working with local education providers, often for free, thanks to external funding. Join us for an update on the Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project (PMCP) and the range of companies that have now used the FIB-SEM to understand their materials more fully – and also hear how you can access graduates to employ and academic expertise through knowledge transfer. View full details at Eventbrite.

Tuesday 23 October 2018 The 2nd International Conference on Photonics and Opto Packaging (POP2-2018), Paignton, Devon
Dan, Yang and Claire were invited to attend and present at this industry-focussed event, sharing the technical capability of PEMC’s new FIB-SEM with the audience of businesses and academics. This was a valuable event for the team in terms of contacts, but also learning more about the photonics and optoelectronics sector, to aid our knowledge when supporting businesses from these sectors in PEMC – especially on the FIB-SEM, which is free for Devon SMEs. View a PDF of our presentation.

April 10 and 11 2018 – EBSD 2018 Annual meeting of the Royal Microscopical Society
The annual EBSD meeting has been a fixed event on the RMS calendar for over 20 years and we regularly welcome top academics from the UK, European and global research community.
The meeting highlighted recent technological advances in the field of EBSD and related instrumentation, but also showcased their applications to real-world problems in both the science and engineering disciplines.
EBSD is routinely used within Earth and planetary sciences, engineering, materials science and physics, with an emerging interest from the biological community. The University of Plymouth also successfully engages with enterprise, with many local, national and international companies seeking EBSD expertise in the design/development of new materials and products. EBSD 2018 aims to bring together specialists from across this broad-reaching speciality; academics, business, technicians and students alike.

Wednesday 7 March 2018 – Hosting the Torbay and South Devon Manufacturing Forum
Attended by a mix of companies and business support providers, the PEMC team hosted the quarterly meeting of the Torbay and South Devon Manufacturing Forum at the University. This was a great opportunity for the team to tell the members about the new FIB-SEM in PEMC and the opportunity for Devon SMEs to have free use of the instrument for up to 30 hours, thanks to funding from the European Regional Development Fund, through Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project.

Friday 9 February 2018 – Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project Launch
Join the PEMC team, Zeiss Microscopy and Oxford Instruments, alongside our first commercial user, Plessey Semiconductors, for an evening reception to find out exactly what FIB-SEM could mean for your business and how you may be able to access extensive free support from this European-funded project during the next three years.
Presentations:

Thursday 25 January 2018 – Beyond the Business as Usual: Innovate UK in the south west
We will be speaking at this event about our current work with business and specifically the opportunities offered by our new ERDF-funded Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project (PMCP) which brings 3D capability to PEMC. Please go to the Innovate UK's Eventbrite page for more details of this event, which is being held in Sandy Park, Exeter.

Friday 26 January 2018 – The Industrial Strategy – Making it work for you!
As part of the University of Plymouth's Research Festival 2018, we will be speaking at this event about our current work with businesses, including successful KTPs that have developed out of PEMC. We will also be talking specifically about the opportunities offered by our new ERDF-funded Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project (PMCP) which brings 3D capability to PEMC for use by Devon SMEs.

Thursday 30 November 2017 – PMG's 40th Anniversary Christmas Lecture 2017
We showcased PEMC and introduced the new Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project (PMCP) at this well-attended event, held at the University of Plymouth.

31 March–10 April 2017 – From Another Place
This fantastic exhibition of electron microscopy images of meteorite samples was a University STEAM collaboration between PEMC and the Creative Cultivator Unit. The images were auctioned at the end of the exhibition, raising just over £1,000 for Plymouth & District Mind.

Wednesday 14 September 2016 – Marine Tech Expo
Dr Natasha Stephen and Claire Pearce spoke at this well-attended event at the University's Marine Station, along with representatives from the marine industry, which was designed to showcase the wealth of marine opportunities and support available in Plymouth and the greater south west.

Tuesday 10 November 2015 – 3D Electron Microsocopy
PEMC introduced the idea of 3D electron microscopy through FIB-SEM (focussed ion beam, scanning electron microscopy) to our existing industry customers at this well-attended evening event in 2015. As a result of the interest generated from this meeting, we went on to successfully bid for ERDF investment to purchase a FIB-SEM, which will be installed in early 2018, initially for the benefit of Devon businesses.

PEMC welcomes a wide range of visitors to the lab all year round; from local economic development representatives and industry groups to schools, we are passionate about electron microscopy and its range of applications.

All forthcoming opportunities are listed on this page, along with relevant events and conferences that we have hosted and contributed to in the past.

Microscopy Live!

PEMC are hosting a Microscopy LIVE! series, where each month the lab's technical specialists will be live for an hour on one of the electron microscopes. A range of different samples will be explored during this series and the audience will able to help guide the session, with questions and where on the sample to focus. This event is open to all whether you're at home or in a classroom, fully interactive, free and online; plus it will be recorded so it can be watched again at a later date.
