Mammal tissue under a microscope
Environmental hepatology is a rapidly emerging discipline that examines how the environments we live in – our air, water, soil, diet, and consumer products – influence liver health across the lifespan. At Plymouth, we are pioneering this field by investigating how real-world environmental exposures, including pollutants such as micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), interact with the liver alongside established contributors to disease (including alcohol, metabolic dysfunction, dietary factors, carcinogens, viral hepatitis, and autoimmune processes) to drive inflammation, fibrosis, metabolic impairment, and cancer.
The Centre of Environmental Hepatology (CEH) brings together scientists, clinicians and environmental researchers to generate mechanistic, clinically grounded evidence that can inform prevention, improve patient outcomes, and support policies that reduce harmful exposures. Our mission is to transform understanding of liver health in a changing world and to ensure that research translates into meaningful impact for patients, communities, and future generations.

Environmental hepatology recognises that liver disease emerges from the interplay between biology, behaviour and the environments that surround us.

By bringing these dimensions together, our work aims to generate evidence that improves prevention, informs policy and ultimately protects liver health by uncovering the effects of modern environmental exposures in a rapidly changing world.
