This is Sophie's story

Sophie Challis graduated in BSc (Hons) Sociology in 2014. After initially spending some time travelling and working abroad, Sophie has now returned to the UK to train to be a teacher.

Our relationships with others, shapes what we see and do

“I originally chose sociology because I enjoyed the subject when I was at school, and even though at that point I didn’t know what I wanted to do in the long run, I did know I wanted to go to university.

Once on the course, I met many people who had a variety of career aspirations and plans I had not thought of before. It was someone on my course who influenced me to go travelling.

“My lecturers were great and very helpful – always giving up their time and offering really valuable advice. The library was also a great support to me; the resources they offer are fantastic.”

Collecting experience all over the globe

“After I graduated, I went travelling to New Zealand, Australia, and South-East Asia.

"After a few months living and working in Brisbane, Australia, I moved to Sweden for just under two years, where I worked as a nanny and learned the language.

"Since then I have moved back to the UK and have recently started a PGCE course at Bath Spa University.”

"The best thing I have done in my career is to help children grasp the basics of the English language."

Making memories in our ocean city

“Plymouth is a lovely city and the University itself has a great campus. Outside of the city, Devon is a beautiful county with amazing countryside and beaches.

“I have so many great memories of studying at Plymouth, so many to choose from, but the friends I made stand out the most for me. My graduation ceremony on the Plymouth Sound was also a highlight.”

Learning through experience

"My advice to my younger self would be to:

  • be more involved in all the clubs and extracurricular activities offered
  • travel for longer after graduation."
