Key features

This 20 credit module is aimed at registered practitioners working within general practice who wish to equip themselves with the necessary practice skills to function within this environment whilst encouraging a critical view of practice.
This is one of three standalone modules that make up the Fundamentals of General Practice programme also including Transition into General Practice and Advancing within General Practice. 
University staff work with input from a multi-professional educational team and experts from practice to give you a unique experience.

This will include: 
  • Consultation within General Practice (GP).
  • Assessment skills and problem-solving.
  • Personalised care.
  • Managing self.
  • Learning in practice.
You will have the opportunity to learn with peers from GP working and enjoy a mixture of learning styles, such as face-to-face teaching, online and distance learning and self-directed learning.
Please keep all dates free to engage with face-to-face teaching, ‘live’ teaching and each other on these days, which maybe via zoom or in the classroom.

Module details

Degree – level 6

By the end of the module, the student will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the application of evidence-based practice to managing consultations and assessment of patients within general practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of personalized care and supporting self-management.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their personal, professional and academic learning and development.
  • Explore the challenges and differences of providing life course healthcare incorporating a range of specialist areas such as paediatrics, mental health and frailty.
  • Demonstrate how their learning and development will enhance service delivery and the quality of life for service users and carers.

Masters – level 7

By the end of the module, the student will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate the application of evidence-based practice to managing consultations and assessment of patients within general practice and identify strategies for change and innovation.
  • Demonstrate understanding and critical application of the principles of personalised care and supported self- management.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their personal, professional and academic learning and development and take on leadership within their context of care.
  • Critically evaluate the challenges and differences of providing life course healthcare incorporating a range of specialist areas such as paediatrics, mental health and frailty.
  • Justify proposed approaches to enhancing service delivery and the quality of life for service users and carers.

In the event that there are low numbers, this module may be rescheduled to an alternative date.
Some modules are also subject to maximum numbers.

Entry requirements

To be considered for a place on these modules you must be one of the following: 
  • a registered practitioner working within a primary care setting in order to meet the module outcomes
  • a health and social care worker in possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree to study the module at degree level
  • a health and social care worker ideally in possession of previous study at degree level to study the module at masters level.
Each student will be considered and advised individually (where required) by the programme team and Professional Development Unit. Please contact the PDU or programme lead if you have any queries regarding your situation.
In alignment with the Health Education Core Competences and Career framework (2022) this course develops an enhanced level, autonomous practitioner. As such it is not suitable for Nurse Associates.
