Girls into Geoscience (GiG) is becoming more than just an event. It has become a network, supporting women in geology and those aspiring to be. Get involved!

This exciting event will introduce female A level students to the Earth sciences and demonstrate the world of careers open to Earth science graduates today.

We are excited to announce Girls into Geoscience 2022 will be going ahead face to face this year for the first time since 2019! This year's two-day event will take place on 4-5 July with a field trip day on the 4th followed by a talks and workshop day on the 5th at the University of Plymouth. Students and teachers are welcome to join us for either of the days or both.

Field trip

We will be running our optional field trip to the fantastic coastal location of Bovisand nearby to Plymouth (see Field trip flyer above) from 9:30-16:00 on 4 July. Places are limited on this field trip and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so make sure you book soon to confirm your place - don’t miss out!

Icebreaker

On the evening of 4 July we invite our attendees to join us for a FREE icebreaker meal on Plymouth’s historic Barbican. Meet and chat with fellow attendees, speakers and staff in a friendly relaxed environment, overlooking the sea. More info to come!

Careers and workshop day

On 5 July we will be running our popular careers and workshop day. Find out about the range of careers geoscience can lead to, and get hands on with different aspects of  geoscience, learning what it is like to study the geosciences at university.

Accommodation and bursaries

Accommodation

Accommodation is available in University halls just a five minute walk from campus.

Ensuite rooms with a shared kitchen are available for £40 a night with all bedding, towels and kitchen equipment provided.
 
Parents and teachers are welcome to stay as well if they wish. Our accommodation is located in the centre of Plymouth where there are a range of shops (if you fancy testing your cooking skills) and restaurants close by!

If you don’t fancy a taste of university life we can also provide a list of local hotels and B&Bs we can recommend.

Travel and accommodation bursaries available!

We are pleased to offer a small number of bursaries to cover travel and accommodation for those students who might otherwise be unable to attend the event. We want to help provide you with every opportunity to fulfil your ambitions!

This funding is available to eligible girls who meet any of the selection criteria outlined below.

  • If you have any disabilities (physical, cognitive or learning)
  • If you are Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME)
  • If you are a looked after young person (i.e. in foster care/care leaver)
  • If you are a first generation student to go to university
  • If you are eligible for free school meals
  • If you live in a postcode area where there is low participation in higher education (as identified by the Office for Students)

Due to the nature of the funding, and to ensure those who need the bursaries the most are able to access them, we are asking eligible girls to apply using the following link: https://forms.gle/UgpV5DKub8DvSpCu9

All applications must be received by 17:00 on Friday 27 May, after which all applicants will be contacted as to whether their application has been successful. We hope to support as many applicants as we can!
