Key features

This 20 credit degree level module, has been specifically developed for those employed within an urgent, emergency and critical care setting, looking to enhance their role as a clinical leader. 
The module will enable you to demonstrate the personal qualities required to work with others and manage finite resources, through initiatives supporting quality improvement and innovation, relevant to these areas of practice. You will be supported to build on your existing expertise, exploring leadership in practice and engagement in opportunities to enhance your confidence and competence to lead and manage quality improvement and innovation. 
Within the taught component of the module you will at times be joined by guest key speakers from all sectors, not just health, who will share their valuable knowledge and experiences.

Course details

 On successful completion of this module you will be able to: 
  • demonstrate systematic and detailed understanding of leadership, management and culture within urgent, emergency and critical care
  • apply a systematic approach to identify and define complex problems, evaluating factors influencing innovation and service improvement
  • work effectively within a team, anticipating and proactively resolving conflict
  • judge the reliability, validity and significance of evidence, evaluating contradictory information/data/results
  • consider patient involvement/patient preference when synthesising ideas, information and evidence to inform novel solutions supporting quality improvement/innovation.

Assessment

You will demonstrate that you have met the assessed learning outcomes in an assignment that can be presented in the style of a project report, a business case or a journal article.

Entry requirements

Professional Development students
Students wishing to undertake this module as part of a professional development pathway must be:
  • in possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree 
  • on a professional register (i.e. NMC, HCPC) and:
  • practicing within urgent, emergency or critical care to have the practice experience required to achieve the learning outcomes.
Each student will be considered and advised individually (where required) by the programme team and Professional Development Unit. Please contact the PDU or programme lead if you have any queries regarding your situation.
