  • Consider the influence of various models and approaches to working with people who misuse substances or have dual diagnosis, as well as the issues for you as an individual and for society.
  • Module content (not exhaustive): definitions of dependence, addiction and withdrawal; interface between mental health and substance misuse; pharmacology of drugs of abuse; types of treatment intervention, rehabilitation and support.

At the end of the module you will be able to:
  • Critically analyse the theoretical concepts of ‘substance misuse', ‘dual diagnosis’ and related ideas.
  • Demonstrate a detailed, critical understanding of drug and alcohol assessment including risk assessment.
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of effective skills for working with people who misuse substances/who have 'dual diagnosis' by providing a critical analysis of the evidence base.
  • Provide a critical analysis of policy and legislation in relation to this client group.

  • Provide an advanced critical analysis of the theoretical concepts of ‘substance misuse', ‘dual diagnosis’ and related ideas.
  • Demonstrate systematic, in-depth and current knowledge and critical understanding of drug and alcohol assessment including risk assessment.
  • Demonstrate systematic, in-depth understanding of effective skills for working with people who misuse substances/who have 'dual diagnosis' by providing an advanced critical analysis of the evidence base.
  • Provide an advanced critical analysis of policy and legislation in relation to this client group.

The masters level module can be studied as a standalone module or as an optional module for MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Practitioner) and MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Nursing and Midwifery Professions).  For MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Mental Health is a pathway-specific module.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the module you must:
  • be a registered health and social care professional working in clinical practice
  • to study the module at degree level you must have previously studied at level 5 (i.e. foundation degree or equivalent)
  • to study the module at masters level you must have previously studied to graduate level (i.e. level 6).
