Key features

This 20 credit masters-level module will draw on the fields of neuropsychology, neuroscience and rehabilitation to explore cognitive and perceptual domains such as memory, executive function, attention and language. 

Our inter-disciplinary teaching team will highlight the functional and psychosocial impact of dysfunction to these domains and provide you with a critical review of current clinical interventions.

This module enables you understand the basis of different cognitive and perceptual domains and understand the cause of common cognitive and perceptual disorders following central nervous system dysfunction and appraise how these may impact on psychosocial function. 

It will also allow you to critically evaluate the evidence base for current assessment and treatment and explore the holistic management of people with cognitive and perceptual deficits.

Course details

 On completion of the module you will be able to:
  • critically evaluate the neural and psychological basis of common cognitive and perceptual functions
  • show insight into the psycho-social impact of cognitive and perceptual dysfunction
  • critically appraise current assessments and interventions for cognitive and perceptual functions
  • develop strategies that may be used during interactions with people with cognitive and perceptual deficits
  • develop holistic management plans to enhance community and social re-integration.
This module can be studied as a standalone professional development module or towards the following awards:

Assessment

The assessment for this module is in two parts:
1. a 2,500 word critical analysis of the assessment and/or management of a case study.
2. a presentation on a case study of a person(s) with cognitive, perceptual or behavioural issues followed by questions.

To be considered for a place on this module:

  • you must have previously studied to graduate level
  • you must be a health or social care professional.
