Key features

This module is specifically designed for students who have already completed a preceptorship programme within their organisation.

It offers the opportunity to achieve academic credit for your professional preceptorship practice development by enabling you to critically consider your previous learning, explore your knowledge in a formal manner, and explore how preceptorship development can influence change in patient care and organisational development.

This module will enable you to reflect on your development in relation to the Department of Health (2012) Preceptorship Framework for nurses, NMC Guidance for Preceptorship (2020) the outcomes from the Reducing Pre-registration Attrition and Improving Retention Project (HEE, 2020).

The module embeds the philosophy of reflection on continuous professional development to enable re-validation for nurses and midwives encouraging you to engage in professional networks and discussions about your practice.

Module content includes theories of learning and development, preceptorship, and life-long learning.

Modules must be completed within a maximum of two years of the preceptorship programme.

HEAD331 course details (degree level)

At the end of this module you will be able to:
  • critically evaluate the contemporary issues that influence preceptorship development
  • critically analyse and evaluate personal, clinical and professional development
  • show an enhanced understanding of the experiential learning process and reflective practice.

APP728 course details (masters level)

At the end of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of current conceptual and research informed concepts in transitional development of the newly registered health care practitioner
  • critically assess and synthesise the factors that are likely to affect the development of clinical practice in the clinical learning environment and at organisational level
  • demonstrate the ability to act with initiative in making decisions within professional or given guidelines, accepting full accountability for outcome.

Teaching information

The modules are both undertaken through our accreditation of prior learning (APL) system. 
There are no taught dates as both modules are taught via distance learning where you can, with tutorial support, create a learning community over a 12 week period via a specifically designed digital learning environment, studying at a pace that suits your work-life balance. 
Please be aware that all modules run to minimum numbers. In the event that there are low numbers, this module may be rescheduled to an alternative date. Some modules are also subject to maximum numbers.

The degree-level module can be studied as a standalone module or as an optional module towards some of our BSc (Hons) Professional Development pathways.
The masters-level module can be studied as a standalone module or as an optional module towards some of our MSc Advanced Professional Practice pathways.

To be considered for a place on these modules:
  • you must provide evidence that you have completed preceptorship.
  • to study the module at masters level you must have previously studied to graduate level.
The masters-level module cannot be undertaken if a degree-level preceptorship accreditation of prior learning (APL) module has already been completed.
