This 20 credit module introduces and critically explores core occupational science concepts in relation to people as occupational beings. It covers topics such as conceptualisation of occupation, culture and occupation, occupational justice, transactional perspective, occupational identity and their links to health and wellbeing. In addition, this module provides an opportunity to investigate the complexity of occupation-centred practice with individuals in a wide range of contexts.

Assessment

The assessment for this module is a written assignment.

This module can be taken as a standalone professional development module, as an optional module towards some of our MSc Advanced Professional Practice pathways or an optional module towards the MClinRes Clinical Research programme – please contact the Professional Development Unit for further information.

Course details

 On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate occupational science in relation to individuals as occupational beings.
  • Critically examine how occupational science concepts inform and guide evidence-based occupation-centered practice. 
  • Critically consider the transactional nature of occupation in relation to individuals as occupational beings, synthesizing relevant evidence.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to undertake this module:
  • must hold a degree in occupational therapy.
Individuals without a degree may be eligible to apply providing they have appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme, please discuss with the Professional Development Unit prior to application.
Each student will be considered and advised individually (where required) by the programme team and Professional Development Unit (PDU). Please contact the PDU or programme lead if you have any queries regarding your situation.
