Key features

This 20 credits masters-level module will build upon your existing knowledge and skills, enabling you to develop an advanced level of critical thinking and clinical reasoning, embedding these extended skills within your practice in innovative ways.

The module will evaluate current practice within musculoskeletal practice, develop advanced critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills and integrate these skills into practice using innovative strategies. 

It will also consider and critically discuss anatomy and biomechanics, common pathologies, screening and diagnostic tools and sensitivity and specificity of these, management approaches and tools, psychosocial aspects including pain and self-management within the context of evidence-based practice.

Case studies will form an important basis of the taught module component.

Course details

 By the end of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate your own musculoskeletal practice, integrating ideas, perspectives and theories from evidence-based practice. Integral to this is critical analysis of the literature in relation to musculoskeletal conditions and manual therapy
  • demonstrate advanced critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills and apply these to the musculoskeletal practice setting with regard to the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions
  • demonstrate the ability to synthesise this information and use your specialist knowledge and skills to evaluate and justify your clinical decision making within your own musculoskeletal practice
  • develop innovative strategies to integrate advanced clinical reasoning into your future physiotherapy practice.

Assessment

The assessment for this module is in two parts:
  • a critical analysis of the assessment and/or management of a case study
  • a presentation on a relevant case study followed by questions.

Entry requirements

 To be considered for a place on this module:
  • you must be a registered health and social care professional or a health and social care worker who has previously studied to graduate level to study the module at masters level
