Emma Abb - BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult Health)

Name: Emma Abbs

Course: BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult Health)

Location: The Knowledge Spa, Truro

"The lecturers at the University of Plymouth are extremely knowledgeable and supportive, it's obvious they want to see you achieve."

"This course has exceeded all my expectations. It is more challenging than I first thought but the rewards are much greater. I absolutely love studying adult nursing at The Knowledge Spa."

Emma's placement experience

"I am very lucky with the two placements I have had so far. They have both been at completely different ends of the spectrum allowing me to undertake a vast range of learning opportunities. My first placement was an acute placement on a gastroenterology and liver unit. I learnt not only the principles of personal care, documentation, care planning and the experience of working in a busy hospital environment but also about diseases of the bowel and liver."

"My second placement was with district nurses. This placement allowed me the opportunity to work alongside a team of highly experienced nurses whilst assessing a broad range of wounds, dressings and injections out in the community."

I have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience whilst out on placement. Getting to know and spend time with patients and their families, and joining them on their journeys whilst gaining experience and knowledge has been invaluable.

Spending time with patients on placement gives you a real insight into what nursing is. I have really enjoyed being able to put learning into practice and develop my skills and knowledge in a safe environment. It is such an interesting and valuable experience.

Focus on skills

"I have improved in my academic writing and gained so much knowledge from working alongside registered nurses whilst out in practice."

"I have gained so many skills that it would be impossible to list all of them, but assessing wounds, applying dressings, administering injections, providing personal care and professionalism are a few."'

Support at every stage

"The lecturers at the University of Plymouth are all extremely knowledgeable and supportive and it is obvious they want to see you achieve."

"The nurses and mentors I have had the pleasure of working with have all been very patient, understanding and helpful. They have taken the time to explain things and pushed me to be the best I can be."
