Key features

This 20 credit module will enhance your existing knowledge and skills in the holistic care of children and young people with mental health issues and will help you to develop a deeper understanding and critical awareness of the contemporary issues faced in caring for them and their families.

Topics covered by this module include definitions of mental health, common mental health issues and contributing factors, multi-agency provision and inclusive care, relevant social policy and legislation, therapeutic interventions, concepts of containment, reciprocity and behaviour management and working with families to promote mental health. 

The module is co-taught by experts from clinical practice with the module lead. 

This module can be studied at either degree or masters level, with both groups of students being taught together with different learning outcomes and assessment – please see course details.

HEAC385 course details (degree level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • critically analyse the cause, effect and holistic care of the child with mental health needs through evidence based practice
  • critically reflect upon working in a multi-professional team
  • demonstrate critical understanding children's behaviour within context of developmental issues.

Assessment

The assessment for the degree level module is a critical reflection on care given to promote mental health in children and young people.

APP727 course details (masters level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • critically analyse and evaluate the causes, effects and holistic care of the child with mental health needs through evidence-based practice
  • act with initiative in identifying the mental health needs of children, young people and their families and accessing appropriate support
  • reflect critically on own actions and work effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team
  • demonstrate critical understanding of children’s and young people’s behaviour within the context of developmental issues.

Assessment

The assessment for the masters level module is a critical reflection.

Entry requirements

To undertake these modules as part of a professional development pathway you must be:
  • a registered health and social care practitioner or health and social care worker working in an area of clinical practice that will allow you to meet the module learning outcomes
  • in possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree, to study the module at degree level
  • in possession of previous study at degree level, to study the module at masters level.
Individuals without a degree may be eligible to apply providing they have appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme, please discuss with the Professional Development Unit prior to application.
