These modules have been specifically designed to enable you to develop your own professional practice by undertaking and reflecting on learning and experience gained through a period of supported independent study related to your agreed learning objectives, whatever your professional background.
You will be supported by the module teaching team throughout the module with support tailored to your individual needs and include an introduction and overview of the module to develop learning outcomes and facilitate your progress during the period of independent study. 
This module is offered to all health professionals with separate options especially tailored for dieticians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and social workers. All groups are taught together but will be assessed separately. The module titles are:
  • ADV712 – Supported Independent Study
  • ADV749 – Dietetic Practice: Supported Study
  • ADV750 – Occupational Therapy Practice: Supported Study 
  • ADV751 – Physiotherapy Practice: Supported Study

Course details

 On successful completion of your chosen module you will be able to:
  • reflect on, apply and critically evaluate personal learning gained through a period of independent study
  • demonstrate advanced evidence based knowledge and skills from the relevant specialist subject area in your area of practice
  • apply critical analysis of theory and research findings to your own practice and development of service
  • demonstrate critically reflexive approaches to practice in your area of practice
  • identify and evaluate improvements for practice and service provision in your area of practice.

Assessment
The assessment for all supported study modules is a 4,000-word written reflective critical and analytical discussion.

ADV712 can be taken as a standalone professional development module, as an optional module towards a number of MSc Advanced Professional Practice pathways or as an optional module towards the MClinRes Clinical Research programme – please contact the Professional Development Unit for further information. 
ADV749 can be taken as a standalone professional development module or as a pathway specific module towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Dietetics only.
ADV750 can be taken as a standalone professional development module or as a pathway specific module towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Occupational Therapy only.
ADV751 can be taken as a standalone professional development module or as a pathway specific module towards the MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Physiotherapy only.

Entry requirements

To be considered for a place on these modules:
  • You must have previously studied to graduate level.
  • All supported study modules – you must be a health and social care professional or a social worker registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
  • ADV749, ADV750, and ADV751 – you must have a first degree, BSc (Hons) at 2:2 or above in the area specified by the module title.
These modules rely on you having a good knowledge of your working environment and you must be able to draw upon this to address a problem you intend to solve within the workplace.
Clinicians without a degree but with appropriate experience may be eligible to apply. You'll be considered and advised individually (where required) by the programme team and Professional Development Unit. Please contact the PDU or programme lead if you have any queries regarding your situation.
