Module aims

  • To facilitate a critical understanding of malnutrition, including the causes, presentation, different types and consequences. 
  • To explore the current evidence base for nutritional support strategies for the treatment of malnutrition in a range of different clinical settings.

Summary of module content

  • To provide an understanding of the complexities of malnutrition predominantly in the UK but also from a global perspective
  • To explore the evidence base for the treatment. 
  • Through the use of case scenarios, you will critically appraise how nutritional assessment and nutritional support can be applied to treat different types of malnutrition in a clinical context.
This module will be delivered through a series of lectures/seminars and workshops.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the causes, presentation and consequences of malnutrition on body composition, metabolism and function.
  • Undertake and critically evaluate a variety of nutritional screening and assessment techniques and tools.
  • Synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge in order to recommend the most appropriate, evidence based dietary regimens in the treatment of malnutrition.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of influential factors such as effectiveness of interventions, limitations, ethical implications and the role of the wider MDT.

  • be a registered practitioner working in an area of practice that will allow you to meet the module outcomes
  • ideally be in possession of previous study at degree level to study the module at masters level.
