This 20 credit masters-level module will provide a framework for thinking about promoting and protecting public health at individual, community, national and international levels by exploring historical and theoretical perspectives.

You will have the opportunity to think critically about the nature, purposes and practice of public health and develop a critical appreciation of the determinants of health and wellbeing. 

You will also critically examine the potential for individual, organisational and community-based approaches to promoting public health as well as the role of policy and power in promoting health.

Course details

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • critically explore historical perspectives, ideologies and models of public health, and health promotion
  • critically examine population perspectives of public health – demographics, changes in population and disease patterns, measurement of health and disease, protection and screening
  • critically appraise social justice perspective of public health with reference to key social, political and economic factors
  • critically appraise public health ethics and ideologies that underpin the policy making process in relation to key public health issues
  • demonstrate insight into various community development approaches to promote health and appraise the models of behaviour change – population versus individual.
Assessment
The assessment for this module is a written assignment.

Module dates
The next planned delivery will be January 7 - April 1 2021. Learning will take place fully online using synchronous and asynchronous activities including one live session each week.

Please be aware that all modules run to minimum numbers. In the event that there are low numbers, this module may be rescheduled to an alternative date. Some modules are also subject to maximum numbers.

Entry requirements

To undertake this module as part of a professional development pathway you must be:
  • a registered health and social care practitioner or health and social care worker
  • ideally in possession of previous study at degree level.
Individuals without a degree may be eligible to apply providing they have appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme, please discuss with the Professional Development Unit prior to application.
