Reverend David Evans

Ecumenical Co-ordinating Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm
  • Worships at Morice Baptist Church
David has been a Baptist minister since 1988 and the co-ordinating chaplain at Plymouth University since 2003. He enjoys watching England play cricket (most of the time), walking on Dartmoor (except when it rains), and is married with four daughters. In his spare time he is also the minister of Morice Baptist Church.

Reverend Tim Smith

Anglican Chaplain

  • Normally in the chaplaincy Friday 10am-1pm
  • Vicar at St. Judes Church Plymouth

Tim has been the Vicar of St Jude’s Church since 2006. He’s passionate about real faith - but not so much about anything that’s just religion or tradition. He has been a Chaplain at the University twice – standing in to help several years ago and again now. He’s married and has two kids, one who is now a student and another not far behind.

Reverend Michael Shaw

Baptist Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Thursday 1pm-4pm
  • Minister at Devonport Baptist Church
Micheal is a Baptist Minister for the “Historic Town of Devonport”. He is married to Katie and has two dogs. Born and raised in Surrey, he studied in Bristol, and moved to Plymouth in 2012. He love cricket, rugby, curry and walks by the sea.

Father Ian Hellyer

Roman Catholic Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Tuesday 1pm-4pm
  • Catholic Chaplain at Christ the King Catholic Church
  • Parish Priest for Saltash & Torpoint
Ian originates from Plymouth and started ministry in the Anglican Church. He converted to Catholicism in 2011 and graciously was granted a dispensation from celibacy, so that as a married man could be ordained a Catholic Priest. Ian is married with ten children, and has degrees both in science and theology, and received a master’s degree in Catholic theology. He is also a parish priest for Saltash and Torpoint.

Captain Val Short

Salvation Army Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Tuesday 10am-1pm
  • Commanding Officer of Congress Hall 
Val is married with three children. She has been a Christian all her life, and joined the Salvation Army in 2000. She was commissioned as an officer in 2008. She loves to use a variety of styles of music as a method of reaching out to people.

Mrs Karen Yuen

Chinese Church Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Wednesday 1pm-4pm
  • Moderator of Plymouth Chinese Christian Fellowship (PCCF)
Karen has been the moderator of the Plymouth Chinese Christian Fellowship at Hope Baptist Church in Peverell since it was formed in 1996. She also supervises the Chinese Christian Fellowship group at the Plymouth University. Karen was an IT consultant for many years, but now she is fully committed to PCCF. And is also a volunteer of the Listening Post Team at the University.

Mr Mark Mesley

Greek Orthodox Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon
  • Worships at St. Demetrios & St. Nikitas Orthodox Church 
Mark is a former Anglican minister; his last post was in Falmouth, Cornwall. Last year he was received into the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. He has a first degree in social sciences, and a postgraduate diploma in theology from Exeter. He also studied at St. Stephen’s House, Oxford.

Mrs Ann Jones

Lay Methodist Chaplain

  • Normally in the Chaplaincy Monday 10am-1pm
  • Plymouth Methodist Central Hall
Ann is formerly a nurse with many years’ experience in an acute teaching hospital. She is involved with children’s work, including ‘Open the Book’ and ‘Messy Church’. She has a particular interest in New Tribes Mission and Open Doors, and enjoys walking and travel. She is married to Barry.

Mr Jonny Libby

Methodist Chaplain

  • Young Adults Worker at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall
Jonny is married to Denise and has three wonderful kids. He enjoys drinking coffee, reading the Word of God and allowing it to read us (combining the two is great fun). He loves sport and getting outdoors.

Miss Becky Watts

Chaplaincy Assistant

  • Becky will be in the Chaplaincy at various times during the week
  • Becky currently worships at The Minster of St. Andrews.
Becky is an illustration student graduating in 2017. She works part time at the Chaplaincy as an assistant. Originally from Buckinghamshire, Becky has loved the move down to the sea! She is your standard student and hopefully a friendly face for a chat.
