Submergence in the Levinsky Gallery
Lloyd Russell
An exhibition featuring a grid of thousands of lights will captivate audiences this summer after going on show at the University of Plymouth.
Submergence is an immersive installation developed by Squidsoup, whose works pioneer the use of light, sound and technology.
It has been shown in over 70 spaces, events and festivals on six continents and is on display in The Levinsky Gallery, within the University’s Roland Levinsky Building, until Saturday 9 August.
A series of workshops will also be held for autistic people, as while Submergence was designed as a playful experience, people with autism have reported feeling calmer, more focused and more engaged while experiencing it.
Submergence presents itself as a physical cube of presence and energy that places visitors within a series of abstracted scenes and energy fields.
There are five distinct movements, each with its own ambience and dynamic forces, played in an ascending sequence of intensity and culminating in an ecstatic crescendo.
Professor Chris Bennewith , Executive Dean of Arts, Humanities and Business at the University, has worked with Squidsoup for many years.

Tens of thousands of people have experienced Submergence over the past decade, and we hope it will appeal to people here in Plymouth over the coming weeks.

But its potential benefits for autistic people are something we plan to explore in detail while the exhibition is running. We will be holding workshops for autistic people and their families, and health and social care professionals working with people with autism. The aim is to see how they experience the grid and to gauge whether there is value in co-creating a new piece of work with autistic people in the future.

The workshops and exhibition will form part of an ongoing collaboration between the University and Squidsoup exploring whether immersive environments could be used to help enhance autistic people’s health and wellbeing.
The project is also exploring the benefits of using artificial intelligence to personalise immersive experiences and react to a user's actions and responses, something that also acknowledges the diverse nature of autistic people.
