This module supports mental health practitioners, within the context of person-centred therapeutic alliances, to work in partnership with people who have complex mental health needs, and with interprofessional colleagues, to plan, co-produce, lead, and evaluate a range of evidence-based interventions.
It explores increasing levels of competence, autonomy, professional accountability, and complex decision-making when working with clinical complexity.

Module aims

The aims of the module are to prepare students, within the context of advanced practice and person-centred therapeutic alliances, to:
  • Lead effective collaboration within and across agencies.
  • Exercise professional judgement and leadership to effectively promote safety and mitigate risk, especially in the presence of deteriorating conditions, multi-morbidity, complexity and unpredictability.
  • Promote and lead collaborative, person-centred care and treatment planning.
  • Prescribe, implement and evaluate a range of evidence-based interventions.

Learning outcomes

  • Provide an advanced critical analysis of how the application of therapeutic factors enable the delivery of safe and effective mental health interventions for patients and their carers.
  • Systematically critically evaluate the impact of collaborative practice with a range of professions and agencies in providing effective mental health interventions.
  • Provide an advanced critical analysis of collaborative risk management interventions in the presence of unpredictability and uncertainty, using least restrictive practices.
  • Promote and lead collaborative care and treatment planning through an advanced critical exploration of a range of evidence-based interventions, selecting and applying environmental, occupational, pharmacological, psychological and social interventions in complex contexts.
  • Apply a systematic understanding and evaluation of the efficacy of care and treatment plans and interventions, using evidence-based evaluation tools and/or outcome measures in collaboration with patients.

Entry requirements

You will normally be a healthcare professional with a first degree or a related academic degree. BSc (Hons) at 2:2 or above, or European first cycle equivalent. Clinicians without a degree but with appropriate experience may be eligible to apply. Overseas students require IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent required.
As this module is delivered online it isn't available to full-time international students with student route visas.
