  • Core modules

    • Introduction to Sociology of Health and Illness (EXCE1106)

      This module will focus on the ways in which socio-cultural factors affect health and social care practice. It will also analyse how external factors impact on individual’s health and well-being and attitudes to health and social care. These should be guided by a broad based knowledge including sociological understanding of themes relevant to health and social care.

    • Human Growth and Development (EXCE1107)

      This module allows students to develop knowledge of factors affecting growth and development across the lifespan. If offers the opportunity to consider psychological and biological perspectives and the significance of life events affecting growth and development.

    • Values, Diversity and Right (EXCE1108)

      This module introduces the key concepts and theories relating to values, diversity and rights within Health and Social Care provision in the UK. Intertwining the need for a range of core skills required for effective communication when working with diverse individuals and groups in formal and informal settings. It offers opportunities to compare theoretical perspectives with personal and professional experiences.

    • Introduction to Law and Social Policy (EXCE1109)

      This module will investigate the historical and political origins of the Social Policy in the UK. It will examine the development of health and social care services and consider contemporary issues. A range of legislation will be explored in terms of how it influences the delivery of health and care services. It is envisaged that students will focus on policy and legislation relating their own areas of work.

    • Personal and Professional Development (EXCE1110)

      This module is designed to enable learners to demonstrate they have the necessary qualities and transferable study and practice skills for relevant vocational employment. This will include reflection of personal and professional development and practice through the use of a journal and also the ability to relate their practice to underlying theory and principles. Work experience is an essential requirement of this module.

    • Disease Pathology and Health Promotion (EXCE1111)

      This module is designed to enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of the pathology of common diseases through the use of health information and statistics. Treatment, alternative approaches and theories of health promotion and health promotion initiatives will also be considered to enable learners to promote good health in their future roles as Health and Social Care professionals.

    • Advanced Mental Health (EXCE2106)

      This module introduces the key concepts of advanced mental health building upon and applying the knowledge gained in Human Growth and Development. The module will introduce students to an array of mental health conditions and treatments applying the psychological perspectives and development issues discussed in Human Growth and Development.

    • Management Quality in Health and Social Care (EXCE2107)

      This module is designed to enable learners to demonstrate they have the necessary qualities and transferable study and practice skills for relevant vocational employment. This will include reflection of personal and professional development and practice through the use of a journal and also the ability to relate their practice to underlying theory and principles. Work experience is an essential requirement of this module.

    • Research Methods in Health and Social Care (EXCE2108)

      This module introduces students to the research process in Health and Social Care. It will aim to equip students with the evaluative skills that will enable them to undertake their own research project and be able to understand and evaluate appropriate research methods.

    • Evidence Based Practice in Health and Social Care (EXCE2109)

      This module introduces the key concepts of evidence-based practice to allow students to progress and develop as competent professionals. It aims to encourage students to develop as reflective practitioners. It will build upon values and principles addressed in EXCE1108. Students will use work-based learning experience and placement to reflect upon their own practice and plan their own programme of development.

    • Ethics in Health and Social Care (EXCE2110)

      This module is designed to enable learners to demonstrate they have the necessary qualities and transferable study and practice skills for relevant vocational employment. This will include reflection of personal and professional development and practice through the use of a journal and also the ability to relate their practice to underlying theory and principles. Work experience is an essential requirement of this module.

    • Introduction to Long Term Conditions and End of Life Care (EXCE2111)

      This module introduces long term health conditions and the concept of end of life care equipping student with the knowledge and understanding of what is needed to provide compassionate, sensitive, respectful and dignified end of life care.
