With an annual budget of £13.5m, Technology and Information Services (TIS) support over 6,000 PCs across the University and provide and maintain state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment in over 300 teaching rooms; a large application portfolio to support teaching and learning and the day-to-day business of the University; and a high-availability network, telephony and server infrastructure.

Our successes

  • Scaled up and introduced new IT services
  • Responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by delivering new tools for hybrid teaching, learning and working
  • Implemented a new state-of-the-art data centre, and a new high-performance computing resource is currently under design
  • Delivered technologies to enable the success of the Brain Research & Imaging Centre project
  • Achieved an average IT service availability of 99.9%
  • Undertook a project to refresh the University's website
  • Improved the security and usability of the University’s mobile application (CampusM)
  • Rolled out multi-factor authentication to staff and students to further boost the University’s cyber security
  • Scored 82.25% in the National Student Survey 2021 for ‘The IT resources and facilities have supported my learning well’

Our current projects

  • x Investing year-on-year to fortify cyber security by expanding the depth of information security monitoring across all systems; we can now more swiftly identify, understand and respond to security incidents such as ransomware attacks
  • x Deploying cloud-based telephony; we have relocated most of our IT services to the cloud
  • x Refreshing our student records system, including streamlining administrative processes across the University
  • x Refreshing our network and continuing to migrate applications to MS Azure and exploit cloud technologies
  • x Refreshing our fleet of critical Apple Macs with the latest models while replacing non-critical Macs with PCs
