Steve Astbury BA (Hons), FCMA, CGMA
In the period following his retirement from the role of Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospitals, Steve has worked as an independent consultant within the NHS and also internationally. He currently teaches Management and Financial Accounting at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Exeter, and regularly contributes to MSc programmes at the University of Plymouth.
Faye Beddow BA (Hons), PgDip (Management), PgCert (Organisational Development)
With a background in learning and development and a focus on leadership development, Faye has over 20 years of experience as a leader and learning professional working across the public sector and Health sector. Her most recent work was with the NHS South West Leadership Academy where she held the post of Leadership and Organisational Development lead, supporting system-wide leadership and organisational development, with a focus on inclusion and compassionate leadership.
Catherine Blackaby
Catherine is an independent coach, facilitator and trainer who works with individuals, teams, and organisations to help them achieve their potential through the development of leadership, change management and quality improvement skills. With over 30 years’ experience of working in the health and care sector, including service development and redesign, operational management of both hospital and community services, and national improvement roles, Catherine brings a wealth of real-life experience and practical tools to her work. Catherine is a former Improvement Fellow with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, where she undertook quality improvement skills training with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in the USA. Besides holding an MBA, she is a licensed practitioner in MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) and SDI (Strengths Deployment Inventory). Catherine is qualified as an NLP (neuro linguistic programming) Master Practitioner and accredited Executive Coach and has a particular interest in the human and cultural aspects of change.
Matthew Bryant MA
Matthew is Chief Operating Officer of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Matthew originally joined the NHS on the national general management training scheme, after graduating from Oxford University. He helped establish the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, of which he became an honorary fellow, teaching undergraduate medical students about healthcare management. Before joining Taunton, Matthew managed medical and surgical services at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and was part of the management team when that trust became one of the country’s first foundation hospitals. Matthew has been involved in the commissioning of specialist services and the development of joint working for health authorities across Devon and Cornwall.

Nicola Henderson, RGN, RCNT, LLM
Nicky is a nurse with legal training who has delivered the module for law and ethics for a number of years. Nicky worked extensively in acute care settings as Ward Sister and Nurse Manager before retraining in law with a particular interest in medical law. She worked in the Legal Team of a large SW hospital during a high-profile Public Inquiry into children's cardiac surgery. Nicky helped establish the Patient Safety Team at the hospital following publication of the Kennedy Report. A key responsibility involved supporting staff to ensure appropriate and sensitive communication required for informed consent from patients and/or their families was achieved. Nicky also volunteers for the Avon Coroner's Court where she provides support to families and staff attending inquest hearings. Nicky's interest in ethics has involved time on both Research Ethics Committees and currently the Bristol Acute Hospitals Clinical Ethics Advisory Group. She also contributes to the undergraduate medical programme for the ethics in medicine module at Bristol University.
