This 20 credit module is offered at degree and masters level and is one of a range of condition specific modules offered by the University. 
You will gain a critical understanding of the principal theories and concepts that influence the management of frailty and complex care needs in the older person. 
Using evidence-based theories around frailty, comorbidity, polypharmacy and the ageing process you will also develop advanced assessment, evaluation and management skills to be applied in a person centred framework in your practice.

ADV608 course details (degree level)

At degree level this module will develop your understanding of the impact of ageing on a person’s health and wellbeing, both physically and psychologically, and will provide you with the opportunity to debate evidence-based strategies and interventions for active ageing, self-management, and independence, in an inter-professional context and evaluate the application of these approaches in your own practice area.

ADV758 course details (masters level)

At masters level this module will give you a deep and critical understanding of the impact of ageing on an individual’s health and well-being, both physically and psychologically. It will provide you with the opportunity to debate and evaluate evidence based, person centred strategies and interventions for active ageing, self-management and independence, in an inter-professional context and enable you to critically evaluate the application of these approaches in your own practice area.

ADV608 learning outcomes (degree level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the relationship between comorbidity, cognitive decline, polypharmacy and ageing, and the impact on the older person’s health
  • identify barriers to managing complex care needs and identify possible solutions, including the promotion of health and well-being
  • appraise relevant literature/evidence for the collaborative interprofessional assessment, evaluation and management of the ageing population
  • discuss key concepts such as end of life care, safeguarding and ethics in the context of the interprofessional team
  • critically apply your learning to your individual area of practice.

ADV758 learning outcomes (masters level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate a critical understanding and appreciation of the relationship between comorbidity, cognitive decline, polypharmacy and ageing, and the impact on the older person’s health
  • identify challenges to managing complex care needs and provide possible solutions to improve outcomes for older people including the promotion of health and well-being
  • critically appraise the relevant evidence base for the collaborative interprofessional evaluation and management of the ageing population
  • critically discuss and incorporate discussions of end of life care, safeguarding and ethics in the context of the interprofessional team
  • critically apply your learning to your individual area of practice ground.

Entry requirements

To be considered for a place on this module:
  • you must be a registered health and social care professional or a health and social care worker in possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree to study the module at degree level, or
  • you must be a registered health and social care professional or a health and social care worker who has previously studied to graduate level to study the module at masters level.
