Module details

This module aims to introduce concepts of leadership in health and care to healthcare professionals from a variety of backgrounds. The module aims to provide a baseline level of knowledge and understanding in healthcare leadership. Key related concepts around quality in healthcare and change management will be introduced, providing a similar baseline or platform for further study. The module will use current theoretical concepts but ground them in the real world so that learners can put theory into practice. The assignments will be relatable and useful to the current context of the learner. The importance of understanding “self” in leadership will be examined and explored. This module can be taken as a stand-alone CPD module.

Assessment

The assessment for this module includes examinations, generic assessments, practical tests and coursework. 

Learning outcomes

  • Critically review some of the key differences between management and leadership, and reflect on different leadership theories in the context of healthcare.
  • Supported by current leadership practice, reflect on their own leadership style and critically analyse how leadership theories resonate with their own style and preference. 
  • Critically review some basic theories of change management, and how these theories link in with different leadership theories and styles.
  • Develop an understanding of the definition and measurement of quality in healthcare, and how improving quality in healthcare links with change management and leadership constructs.
  • Critically review these concepts as applied to a real problem (for example, within their own workplace).

You can apply to study this masters level module, if you have achieved an honours degree 2.2 (or equivalent) and above, in a subject related to healthcare management, leadership and innovation. If you do not have a degree, have a degree awarded below the minimum (2.2), or a degree in an unrelated subject, we may consider your application on the basis of your work experience or relevant training.  
Fluency in spoken and written English is required; therefore, if English is not your first language, evidence of competence in English language will be required. If you are an international student, please look at information related to enrolment on the full time masters (MSc) programme. Further support and guidance is available from our International Office.
