What is the Careers Mentoring Programme?

The Mentoring Programme is an employability related programme, which has two specific objectives; raising aspirations and improving employability. Mentoring provides a fantastic opportunity to share relevant career sector and employability focussed advice and guidance. 

Why should I become a mentor?
  • to give back to the next generation
  • to provide advice and guidance
  • to share knowledge and support others
  • to maintain and develop links
  • to gain new perspectives and fresh ideas.
On completion of the programme, you will receive a Career mentoring programme digital badge, showcasing your commitment to your personal and career development. Learn more about the benefits of digital badging.

Do I have time to take part in the programme?
We ask for a minimum of 4 sessions (only 4 hours) to be completed across the 6-month period. 

When does the programme run?
The Careers Mentoring programme runs from November to April and February to July. 

Where do contact meetings take place?
Communication with your mentee can be face to face, virtually via zoom/teams, email or telephone. If you do decide to meet face to face, please ensure that you are in a public meeting location e.g. campus, cafes or place of work if there is a suitable space open to public access.
We host optional facilitated Meet your mentor – drop in sessions: these are hosted by the mentoring team who are on hand to answer any questions you or your mentee may have. These will be held in the Student Hub inside the Charles Seale Hayne Library and are a great way to meet up with your mentee in a familiar and friendly setting.

What do I talk about or include in the sessions?
Use the action plan completed in the student training to help you. This is a flexible programme, you may come up with new ideas naturally which you can add, or it may be set agendas for the programme. You will also get the chance to talk to other mentors to share good practice. 

Who can apply to become a professional mentor?

We are always looking for mentors from a variety of sectors and disciplines. You will be surprised how much knowledge and experience you have to share. Becoming a mentor is a great way to enhance your skills, give back to the next generation and meet like-minded professionals in your career journey.
