Work placements

We offer work placements between Year 2 and the final year of your programme. This will enable you to gain a positive learning experience within a work setting that will support your studies and future employability.

Optional placement year

You will also have the option of undertaking a work placement as part of your degree course for a minimum six months full time (or part-time equivalent). If you successfully complete your placement, you'll be awarded a University Certificate of Professional Experience. These opportunities will enrich your course and career prospects. Examples of placement years include working as a Research Assistant at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton and working with a nutrition team in South Africa.

Research summer placements

Research summer placements are also available. These competitive placements are available for students who demonstrate excellent performance in their studies and allow students to gain valuable research experience within the Biomedical Research Group.
Recent graduate Rachel Hine, won a competitive summer studentship worth £2,500 from the Nutrition Society to address the question – could sleep and its relationship with other lifestyle factors affect weight gain in pregnancy? Read about her research placement.
