What will we be doing?

Join us for relaxed, creative workshops exploring our relationship with Dartmoor’s rivers. Through a combination of gentle outdoor exploration and hands-on activities, we’ll look at the river through our senses, share stories and memories, explore what we know about river health, and imagine how we might care for these places in the future.
Activities may include creating a sensory river map, taking photographs, sharing stories, exploring maps and ecological information, and imagining the river’s future. There are no right or wrong answers, and you don’t need any specialist knowledge or artistic experience to take part.

Who is the event for?

The workshop is intended for people of all ages. We welcome people with different experiences and relationships with the river, whether you live locally, visit regularly, enjoy outdoor activities, or are simply curious about the natural environment.
You’re welcome to participate in whichever activities feel comfortable for you. You can draw, write, talk, listen or observe.

Where do we meet?

Meeting point: Cadover Bridge Car Park
Please arrive anytime between 09:00–15:00. Look out for our team of researchers in a pop-up tent.

How long will it last?

The workshops will running from 09:00–15:00 on Monday 26 October, Tuesday 27 October and Wednesday 28 October. Please arrive at any time; you can engage for 5 minutes or up to an hour with the various activities we have planned.

What should I bring?

Please come dressed for spending time outdoors. We recommend bringing:
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots suitable for the terrain.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing, including a waterproof coat.
  • Water and any snacks you may need.
We’ll provide the workshop materials, including maps, drawing materials and activity prompts. You don’t need to bring anything special to take part.

Is the site accessible?

The workshop will take place outdoors beside the river, where paths and surfaces may be uneven, muddy or slippery. Access conditions can vary with the weather, and some activities may involve walking or standing for short periods.
Access information: There is parking at the location, but no toilets. Our workshop will be accessible, although paths are uneven with various small gradients across the site.
If you have access requirements or would like to discuss whether the location will work for you, please contact Zoe Latham at zoe.latham@plymouth.ac.uk before booking. We’ll be happy to talk through the arrangements and possible adaptations.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The workshop will take place outdoors, so please dress for the forecast. The event will go ahead in light rain. If the weather is more severe, we will postpone the event and let attendees know.
For safety, activities will take place away from unsafe river edges. You will not be expected to enter the water.

Do I need to book?

No booking is required, and there is no cost to attendees.

Will I be photographed or recorded?

The workshop may involve opportunities to share stories, photographs and reflections. Taking part in these activities is optional. We’ll explain how any material may be used in the research before asking for your consent. If you would prefer to participate without being audio-recorded or photographed, please just let one of our staff know on the day.

Why are we running this workshop?

The workshop is part of Immersive Places, a research project exploring how creative storytelling can help people connect with Dartmoor’s rivers and understand the ecological challenges they face. What participants share will help us understand how people experience these places, what they want to know about river health, and how future storytelling and engagement might support river stewardship.
