The University of Plymouth is dedicated to maintaining our Fairtrade accreditation.
This commitment involves advocating for fair prices, improving working conditions, promoting local sustainability, and ensuring Fairtrade terms for farmers and workers in our procurement processes and supplier partnerships.
This event is open to University of Plymouth students and aims to raise awareness about Fairtrade, its impact on global communities, and encourage behavioural changes regarding Fairtrade purchasing decisions among students.

Introduction to Fairtrade and the Fairtrade University Award Laura Parry , Head of Sustainability
Learn about the origins of Fairtrade, why choosing Fairtrade products matters, and how they promote ethical and sustainable practices. Laura will share the University’s progress toward earning the Fairtrade University Award and explain how students can actively participate in supporting Fairtrade initiatives on campus.
Owens Coffee talk and Q&A: Pricing and the Importance of Fairtrade – Jenny McDonough, Head of Coffee
Talk about a visit to Rwanda.
Kookskools talk: Fairtrade Organic Cotton – Andy Ashcroft
With extensive experience in Fairtrade cotton and multiple trips to India, Andy will explore the role of Fairtrade and sustainability in schools, colleges and universities. Representing Owens, a company transitioning to Fairtrade and organic uniforms, Andy will share real-world insights, present educational materials and lead an engaging workshop based on his experiences in India.
Interactive Activity: "How much would you pay for these products?" – Isabella Francis
Explore how Fairtrade products compare in cost to non-Fairtrade alternatives both on campus and in surrounding shops, and what those price differences mean for producers, ethics, and sustainability.
Visual Campaign Creation: Designing Fairtrade Awareness Posters
Use magazines, Fairtrade icons, product packaging, and other materials provided to design powerful visual posters that inspire others to choose and support Fairtrade products. Get creative and spread the message of ethical consumption!
