Hosted by the School of Art, Design and Architecture, this series of talks, films and showcases aims to mark our contribution to addressing the challenge of climate change during the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) held in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December.
The series includes talks from artists, filmmakers and architects who are engaging with COP themes and give valuable insights and research projects that inform a green transition. All the projects in some way create new ways to envision or re-imagine our relationship with our material world and provide impactful outcomes as to how we transition to new ways of inhabiting our world.
The events are scheduled over a number of days and all are welcome to attend either one or single events.

Laura Hopes (Still/Moving)

Thursday 7 December, 5pm–6pm, The Levinsky Room, 3rd Floor Roland Levinsky Building
Dr Laura Hopes, Lecturer in Fine Art, will speak about her work as part of the artist collective Still/Moving CIC, with works such as 2021: NO NEW WORLDS. NO NEW WORLDS was installed as part of COP26 Glasgow and the 2023 Civic Plymouth Centre installation in collaboration with the poet Ben Okri and aims to stimulate debate across the city about critical questions around climate crisis and society.

Co-creating rural building futures: The Bridport Living Lab with Alejandro Veliz Reyes

Friday 8 December, 5pm–6pm, The Levinsky Room, 3rd Floor Roland Levinsky Building
Dr Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Associate Professor in Digital Design, will talk about his research on digital fabrication of housing building elements to address local challenges through place-based and multidimensional ‘systems thinking’ challenges. The project aims to prompt discussion and exchange beyond housing stock into environmental, social and material issues surrounding communities’ envisioning of local futures. The project will support Bridport’s transition towards a greener and more inclusive community housing delivery plan by stimulating place-based co-creation methodologies with designers, builders, local communities, and supply chain stakeholders involved in housing delivery. 

Film: 47˚C (2022) introduced by Heidi Morstang

Monday 11 December, 4pm–5pm, Jill Craigie Cinema, Roland Levinsky Building
The filmmaker Dr Heidi Morstang will introduce the film 47˚C. World-leading Climate Change scientist, Camille Parmesan and Evolutionary Biologist, Michael C Singer have conducted field work on the ecology and evolution on the Edith’s Checkerspot butterfly since 1968. The film is narrated through their investigations and discoveries during field work and is a glimpse into their life-time dedication to this study. During their search for these vulnerable insects, we are presented with a microcosm universe seen in relation to global climate change patterns.

Our contribution to the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28)

Bringing together representatives from 198 parties across the world, to unite around tangible climate action and deliver realistic solutions, the aim to meet the Paris Agreement. This Agreement aims to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 and to adapt to the existing effects of climate change.
