As workplaces and societies are changing, it is becoming more common for employees to expect their work and personal lives to fit together well.

There are a variety of types of leave, some legally required of an employer and other options offered as additional benefits for working for that organisation. Examples of common types of leave you may experience include:

  • holidays and time off
  • sick leave
  • maternity/paternity/adoption leave
  • compassionate leave.

As well as leave, many employers may also consider requests for flexible working such as home working, compressed hours or flexi-time.

Leave entitlements vary across all employers. To find out about the policies within your workplace, speak with your line manager, HR team or check your staff handbook or intranet pages.
