Megha Kannath Parambu Anilkumar, Falmouth Harbour intern

The Entrepreneurial Futures Net Zero Internship and Leadership Programme was a funded internship opportunity placing current students or recent graduates of the University of Plymouth within businesses throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to work on a specific low-carbon challenge or opportunity.
Megha worked as a Net Zero Intern for Falmouth Harbour – the focus was on advancing sustainability efforts by calculating and analysing the organisation's Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This involved a detailed assessment of their own operations to identify key sources of emissions and areas for improvement.

3  What were the aims?

  • Calculate and analyse Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  • Develop a comprehensive target plan for emission reduction.
  • Create a detailed carbon emission report aligning with GHG protocols and net zero goals.

3  What was achieved?

  • Accurately calculated Falmouth Harbour's Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  • A target plan was developed, outlining actionable steps towards reducing emissions.
  • A sustainability report was completed, supporting the organisation's net zero commitment.
  • The internal assessment helped lay the groundwork for future sustainability initiatives and improved organisational self-awareness regarding environmental impacts.

Megha has diligently reviewed fuel logs, invoices, meter readings and provided and applied Greenhouse Gas protocol methodology to create robust carbon accounts for our organisation. This provides us with the ability to communicate our carbon emissions to our stakeholders and to predict and monitor the effectiveness of initiatives we put in place to reduce emissions to achieve our net zero goals.

Megha has also ensured that we are able to continue to measure our emissions through the drafting of processes and has developed potential targets that we can use to continue to reduce emissions.
I have been continually impressed with Megha's work ethic, understanding, enthusiasm and attention to detail. It is with regret we cannot continue her internship for a longer duration."
Vicki, Falmouth Harbour

My internship with Falmouth Harbour allowed me to apply my academic knowledge to real-world challenges.

The experience improved my analytical, project management, and technical skills. Challenges, such as data inconsistencies, were tackled through a systematic approach to data validation and self-assessment. Overall, this opportunity was incredibly rewarding."
