A University of Plymouth student has been selected to compete at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
Doaa Shayea, who studies Sociology alongside her training, will represent Team England in Para Powerlifting at the Games in Glasgow this July.
A passionate champion for disability rights and inclusion, Doaa started powerlifting four years ago – when the last Commonwealth games were taking place.
She had previously competed in wheelchair racing, but chose to move to powerlifting to further push her body, and trained with the Games as her goal.

From wheelchair racing to powerlifting, my journey to Glasgow 2026 isn’t what most people expect.

It’s been years of hard work, a new sport, a new mindset, and starting University too – but I’m so grateful for the opportunity.

Doaa’s selection comes alongside her recent silver medal at the European Championships and representing Great Britain at the World Para Powerlifting Championships last autumn.
Alongside her sport and academia, Doaa is a public speaker, proud Muslim and change maker – disrupting typical narratives that limit the potential of those with diverse abilities.

Being selected for the Commonwealth Games is a testament to the struggles of women with disabilities, Muslim women, and all those whose courage often goes unseen.

Every setback, every challenge, every quiet moment of doubt has led me here – and I know I’m exactly where I need to be.
