RAMS lab
The University of Plymouth has created a new research and teaching laboratory that will examine the physical properties of radioactive materials, while training future workforces for the nuclear, engineering and environmental sectors.
The Radioisotope and Advanced Materials Suite (RAMS) is a radiation-licensed facility that supports the detailed physical, structural, and elemental characterisation of complex materials.
Approved by the Environment Agency, it includes a range of analytical equipment and a rare end-to-end capability from sample preparation through to high-resolution structural, elemental, and radiological measurement.
This is key to research – led by academics right across the Faculty of Science and Engineering – that is exploring nuclear reactor safety, radiation protection, waste management, and the development of advanced materials for future nuclear systems.
Researchers are also actively engaged in projects examining graphite technologies, carbon capture, environmental contamination and novel solutions that enhance the safety, resilience and long-term sustainability of nuclear infrastructure.
RAMS complements existing analytical facilities available for research and consultancy at the University, including the Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC) and composites and materials analysis labs in the Babbage Building.
Together, they form a suite of facilities through which academics work closely with key industry and regional partners to strengthen the UK’s nuclear capability and skills base.

The RAMS Lab is an exciting addition to our research and teaching.

It houses a range of equipment that can analyse the structure, porosity and surface areas of materials, which is critical to understanding what is happening within them and how they react in different environments. It is a unique space in terms of the instruments we now have here and the broad scientific expertise that we possess across chemistry, marine and earth science. It will be key to current projects we are pursuing across the nuclear, environment and health sectors.

In addition to being a research facility, RAMS is also used for teaching and student projects across subjects including chemistry, geography, marine biology and environmental science.
It ensures students graduate with hands-on experience of real analytical instrumentation and an understanding of how science operates in regulated environments.
Undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral researchers train directly on advanced analytical instrumentation and learn what it is like to work within radiation-controlled laboratories, an approach that directly supports the UK skills pipeline.

These labs are primarily set up for research and consultancy, but they also feature in our teaching programmes.

That makes us different to other university and we run one of the only chemistry courses that gets undergraduate students into this type of lab. Thousands of graduates are required to join the nuclear sector, and by training our students on these instruments, we are ensuring they are industry ready, confident, and have experience on the types of equipment they might encounter in the workplace.

The RAMS Lab is also a key component of the University’s participation in the South West Nuclear Hub, through which it works alongside academia, industry and government to drive innovation, knowledge exchange and regional growth in the nuclear sector.
The new RAMS Lab was launched during an event attended by stakeholders from the South West Nuclear Hub, and representatives from a number of the UK’s leading environmental and energy companies – including major engineering and energy companies including Babcock and EDF Energy.

The new RAMS facility at the University of Plymouth is a significant step forward for the region.

It combines cutting-edge research with hands-on training that will equip the next generation of nuclear professionals. Investments like this are vital to strengthening the UK’s nuclear skills pipeline and supporting the safe, sustainable future of our industry. Building on our Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year, Babcock will continue working closely with the University to strengthen skills, create opportunities and support the long-term growth of the UK’s nuclear workforce.
