Boy flying kite with Dad

Resources for children and families

This activity aims to promote creativity, imagination and adventure based on the book ‘Whatever Next!’ by Jill Murphy. At the bottom of the page you can view and download PDF posters with ideas for activities and questions.

Activities you can do with children

  • Create a form of transport to travel in.
  • Pack a suitcase or bag and make a passport.

The adventure can be to a real world location, for example, somewhere they may have visited before on a holiday or a place they may not have visited e.g.space.

Additionally the location can be an imaginary land which your child has fully made up.

Questions to ask children to promote learning through play:

  • Where are you going to go next? What’s the name of the place?
  • How are you going to travel?
  • What are you going to pack for your adventure?
  • Who is coming with you?
  • What will the weather be like? Hot or cold? What clothes will you need to wear?
  • Who may you meet on your adventure?
  • How long will it take to travel there?
  • When you have arrived - What can you smell? What can you hear? What can you feel?
  • What do you think you will find on your adventure?
  • What are you going to make for your travels? Are you going to build a rocket to get there, or maybe a unicorn or dinosaur to travel with? Use your imagination, this is your story.
  • What food are you going to take with you? Think about what your friends coming with you may like too.
  • Did you enjoy your adventure? Do you want to go again?
