Academic staff from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business are invited to this place-based seminar discussion with
Professor Alison Anderson and Dr Candice Howarth.
Dr Candice Howarth is the Head of Local Climate Action at the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, she is Co-Director of the £3.5 million Place-based Climate Action Network (PCAN) and oversees the institute’s work on preparedness and resilience to extreme heat in the UK. She has led and contributed to projects totalling £4.3 million on resilience to extreme heat, where adaptation fits in climate governance and how co-production of knowledge can be used to better inform climate decision-making. She has an interdisciplinary background in climate policy and pro-environmental behaviour with degrees in meteorology (BSc), climate change (MSc) and a PhD in climate policy and pro-environmental behaviour. She has extensive experience in qualitative research design, delivery and analysis of semi-structured interviews, workshop and focus groups.
She chairs the Royal Geographical Society Climate Change Research Group, sits on the Royal Meteorological Society Climate Science Engagement group, is a member of the London Heat Risk Group and was a member of the Steering Group of the Physiological Society’s Heat Resilience Strategy. She was a contributing author for the 3rd UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA3). She sits on the Editorial Board of the journal Environmental Communication and is an Associate Deputy Editor for the journal Climatic Change. She regularly advises a range of international, government and non-governmental organisations, her work has been covered by various media outlets and she is a frequent speaker at policy, practice, third sector and events.
The talk will reflect on the five years of the ESRC Place-Based Climate Action Network (PCAN) which came to an end in December 2023. Candice will provide an overview of the activities of PCAN in its core cities of Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds, share insights from the broader impact it has had, and provide a deep dive into research on place-based approaches to extreme heat.
