The HPC team ( Abhinav Praveen , Dr Craig McNeile , Dr Davide Vadacchino and Dr Vincent Drach ) are organising two three-hour hands-on sessions aimed at providing an introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) at the University of Plymouth.
We will use the new cluster 'Lovelace' and discuss a number of topics. The Lovelace System is a HPC cluster capable of some of the most heavy-duty computing tasks in a variety of fields. Our students can access this facility to work on projects that demand large storage, high computing power, and fast graphical generation, such as in mathematics and computer science, and to get accustomed to state-of-the-art computing technologies. The facility informs and enables our teaching while helping our postdoctoral students to pursue more advanced knowledge in their subject and tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
The facility is helping to boost research output across our core disciplines, capitalising on the increasing adoption of AI and Big Data at the University and in local industry. The Lovelace System fosters innovation and accelerates knowledge transfer in these areas, supporting research excellence while giving local industry professionals access to the skills, expertise and computing time needed to upskill and develop their businesses and institutions.
We welcome academics, and PhD or masters students to these introduction sessions. There are no prerequisites for attending and it is recommended to sign up to both sessions to gain maximum benefit.
The content will be similar to a previous event run in 2023. If you do not have an account on the cluster, a temporary one will be provided.
Please register your attendance on Eventbrite via the links below or email vincent.drach@plymouth.ac.uk for further information.

Session 1: Tuesday 24 June – HPC training: Introduction to Linux and HPC

The first session will cover:
  • Introduction to Linux (filesystem, basic commands)
  • Remote connection to the cluster from Windows/Linux/MacOS (ssh, copying file from/to the cluster)
  • Using the cluster: loading module, queuing system and job submission, compiling simple programs
  • Installing your own tools / manage the virtual environment.
If time allows, we will also discuss more advanced topics: Introduction to parallel programming paradigms and measuring performance.

Session 2: Thursday 26 June – HPC training: Automatisation and Performances

The second session will discuss:
  • Writing scripts: useful commands to customise log files
  • Post-processing: tracking errors and bugs
  • Moving a large number of files and optimising the copy
  • Archiving data
  • Checking that files have not been modified
  • Finding information in logs (grep)
  • Automatic edition of input files (sed).
