Coastal settlements

A European Council of Town Planners Conference theme

Aim

To investigate the characteristics and planning issues affecting coastal settlements across Europe.

Potential presentations

  • Understanding housing need, deprivation and affordability in coastal settlements and the effect on regeneration initiatives, including the consequences of Houses of Multiple Occupancy in port cities and seaside resorts (SDG 11.1).

  • Improving the external and internal public transport connectivity of coastal settlements to facilitate the local economy, regeneration projects (SDG 11.2).

  • Approaches to achieving effective public engagement given the distinctive composition of coastal settlements. Participation can be dominated by the ‘usual suspect’ groups (middle class, well-educated, retired) and unintentionally exclude ‘seldom heard’ groups (working populations, disability groups, youth) (SDG 11.3). Local level planning may offer a more effective approach to inclusion.
