Biography

Biography

I am a Consultant Orthodontist at University Hospitals Plymouth and Associate Professor and Consultant Orthodontist at Peninsula Dental School with subspecialty interests in orthognathic surgery, the ortho-restorative interface and lingual orthodontics.

I am a highly committed orthodontist with experience in adult patients both alone and as part of a multidisciplinary specialist team.

I joined the Royal Navy whilst a dental undergraduate at the University of Manchester in 2000. Upon graduating in 2001, I undertook vocational training at HMS Drake and JMDU Gibraltar. Subsequently I had a wide variety of postings as a Dental Officer, which included large shore establishments, singleton billets with the Royal Marines, and an aircraft carrier. This included a deployment on OP HERRICK V as SDS Joint Operations Afghanistan in 2006, where I relished the challenges of providing high quality dentistry in the operational environment.

Whilst a General Duties Dental Officer I obtained further postgraduate qualifications, including his Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (MFGDP(UK)), the Certificate in Dental Health Services Leadership and Management, as well as a restorative dentistry diploma and subsequent MSc at Leeds University. Whilst serving onboard HMS ARK ROYAL I became a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners, the only Dental Officer to date who has gained this accreditation on-board an operational aircraft carrier.

In 2009 I undertook the Initial Command and Staff Course (Maritime) with a subsequent Staff Officer appointment at Navy Command Headquarters, involving equipment procurement, through life capability management, preparing and delivering deployable medical capabilities and developing maritime doctrine (as well as co-ordinating a couple of Royal visits).

Appointed as the Defence orthodontic candidate in 2011 following a competitive application process, I undertook Specialist training in Orthodontics at Cardiff Dental Hospital, which I completed in 2014. As the Royal Navy’s sole Specialist Orthodontist, I provided an orthodontic service for the Defence Dental Services to entitled personnel and their families in the UK, Gibraltar and in Germany. During this time, I also undertook a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In In 2016 I was promoted to Surgeon Commander (Dental) and was the Senior Dental Officer at HMS Sultan, a large multi-chair clinic in a large training establishment, in addition to my orthodontic service provision. I subsequently left a secure military career in 2017 in order to take up Consultant training at UHP.
