Biography

Biography

Ryan is a final year PhD candidate at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research at University of Plymouth. He is a modernist composer and orchestrator and has research interests in experimental music theatre and music psychology. Specifically, Ryan is interested in the ways in which music affects the brain and how music performance elicits emotional arousal in audiences.

Research

Research interests

Music Theatre, Opera, Intermediality, Experimental Music, Immersive Theatre, Chamber Opera, Sound Art.

My PhD research is investigating, though social science experiments, how orchestration employed in music theatre creates certain aesthetics which link audiences to deep emotional reactions such as pain, discomfort, strong empathy, happiness, laughter, and guilt.
