Lecturer in Optometry

Qualifications

In 2017, João started his funded PhD in health studies at the University of Plymouth. Alongside his studies, he has supported the BSc (Hons) Optometry programme as a Clinical Demonstrator and Examiner in Clinical and Specialist skills modules. In 2018, he became an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and, in 2020, he assumed a Lecturer role in Optometry, leading the Introduction to Pathology and Therapeutics module.
Before joining the Optometry team at the University of Plymouth, João graduated in Optometry – Vision Science (2014) and did a post-graduation in Biomedical Engineering (2017) whilst working as a Clinical Optometrist for a number of private primary eye care practices and multinational companies across Portugal.

Research

Research interests

João’s main area of research is the development of tools to assess visual function under dim light levels. These tools may be used to evaluate acquired visual impairments due to retinal pathologies, such as, age-related macular degeneration. He has presented his work in a number of national and international conferences.
