Research interests

I am interested in understanding how organisms adapt to the most extreme environments on earth. My research at Plymouth focuses on tardigrades and rotifers, two animals that are capable of surviving incredibly stressful conditions including desiccation, radiation exposure and freezing temperatures. I will be characterising the genetic toolkits that allow these animals to survive using a suite of methods including comparative genomics, molecular biology and developmental biology. I then hope to see whether aspects of this 'genetic toolkit' can be transferred into less resilient species and be used in other applications.
