Bringing the significant role that students play in the life and work of the Plymouth Institute of Education to UPPScale

Students are central to the teaching and learning activity of the Plymouth Institute of Education (PIoE); they are also implicitly involved in knowledge exchange activity through, for example, teacher education programmes, community based work placements and international study exchanges. 

Students are partners in research activity across the PIoE; this activity includes student-led research projects completed during academic studies and research in partnership with PIOE academic staff and associates. Students also engage in research with community groups and organisations as participants and through activity such as work-based learning and work experience placements. 

Student partnerships operate throughout the PIoE and beyond through the civic work of the institute. Students are involved in, for example, community projects, charities and third sector organisations as workers, participants and volunteers.

 Jack Smith, a BA Education student graduate, has been working with The Bridge to inform a Knowledge Exchange Toolbox for students and staff as part of the Engaging Students in Knowledge Exchange project.

 Working with the University's Widening Participation team Doctoral Teaching Assistant, Cara Baer, worked as a research assistant looking into how underrepresented groups are supported to access to the BA Education course.

Community book share box Community book share boxes
 A group of BA (Hons) Education students were inspired to create community book share boxes. The project’s ethos was to provide local communities with a tool to start conversations, share books and enjoy turning the last page of a fantastic novel.

 A live community-based project which aimed to design an outdoor storytelling space for Stonehouse Creek, Plymouth. The design team comprised Architecture, Early Childhood Studies and Education students working with local primary pupils.
