University to host thousands at Undergraduate Open Day

Plymouth University’s award-winning campus and teaching and learning excellence will be showcased to prospective students and their families next week.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Undergraduate Open Day on Saturday 11 October, where they will be given tours of the campus and wider city to get a flavour of what life would be like as a Plymouth University student.

It will take place just days after the University rose 22 places to its highest ever global position (278th) in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, trusted by governments, industries, academics and prospective students as a benchmark for higher education excellence.

Dr Maureen Powers, Dean of Students at Plymouth University, said:

“I am looking forward to welcoming students and their families to the first step of what will be a life-changing journey, full of exciting and enriching opportunities. Visiting us and meeting our globally-renowned academic staff, our dedicated professional support teams, our current students and indeed prospective classmates, is the perfect way to gain an understanding of what makes Plymouth University such a special place. It also gives us the chance to demonstrate how we can transform students’ lives through an experience enriched by research, professional and practical work, and self-development opportunities that will help them develop into global citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.”

This year’s Undergraduate Open Day will include tours of The House, the brand new £7 million theatre and performing arts centre, as well as the newly revamped and revitalised Students’ Union building at the heart of the campus.

Prospective students and parents will be able to talk to the Residence Life teams and get a tour of the student accommodation options, while those still exploring academic options will be able to access dedicated advice from lecturers in a range of subjects.

There will also be advice on topics and services including student finance, the UCAS application process and careers advice, with sessions designed specifically for parents and guardians to help them prepare for the transition to university life.

Dr Maureen Powers added:

“At Plymouth University, a student’s time here is so much more than a passport to a job. We help students to develop their life skills so they can build careers, adding real value to the economy and society at large. I hope that by visiting our Open Day, students get a real sense of the friendliness and creativity that is at the heart of our university community and the range of opportunities and possibilities available. Take full advantage and ask all your questions – we will be happy to answer them, and to explain why we may be exactly the right first choice for you.”

The Undergraduate Open Day on Saturday 11 October runs from 9am to 4.30pm, and for more information or to book a place, click on the link below.

Open day - 11 October 2014

Thank you Plymouth. You have made it crystal clear what I should do. It was highly informative with tours from students so you could get honest opinions and great presentations from tutors. Certainly a top choice for me, thanks again!
