Bloomberg Lab

Students from Plymouth University are using cutting edge up-to-the-minute data to tap directly into the pace and excitement of the financial markets.

The Plymouth Business School has teamed up with finance and media company Bloomberg to create an interactive learning suite accessible to those on a range of business courses.

It brings the complexities of financial decision making and macro-econometrics into the classroom, enabling students to have access to the same information and technology relied on by financial professionals all over the world.

The resource is already proving hugely popular with students, and could prove a vital tool in helping them gain an edge in an increasingly competitive job market.

Hilary Duckett, Director of the Plymouth Business School, said:

“The Bloomberg Interactive Learning Suite allows students to research fields such as corporate finance, derivative markets, portfolio and risk analytics, real time data and investment simulations. Using the latest technology, the students are able to undertake real world learning which both deepens their research and enriches coursework. It enables them to develop their analytical skills, enhance their decision making using real time data and prepares students for a challenging employment marketplace.”

The Bloomberg facility is already being used by students on the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course to gain an understanding of the stock markets.

They learn how to analyse the markets, assess economic scenarios and interpret key news developments that might impact the global economy.

With access to exclusive stories as they break, the students can follow and interpret the market-moving events that finance and business professionals rely on to stay informed and make critical financial decisions.

It also supports all general business and management subjects, covering economics, management, marketing, supply chain, shipping and logistics.

Magdalena Kochanowicz, Project Manager of the Bloomberg Trading Floor at Plymouth University, added:

“Our Lab helps to bridge the gap between the hypothetical and the practice, with students having the opportunity to apply academic theories to decision making through real world scenarios. It also enables them to work towards Bloomberg’s self-certification programme whereby students can in their own time work towards a certificate in Bloomberg proficiency. Irrespective of their future careers, attaining the certificate will enhance student employability.”
