Ellyn Mosley

Exactly 50 years ago, Queen sat at the top of the Christmas chart with Bohemian Rhapsody – a song that went on to become one of the best-selling of all time.
Now a University of Plymouth student has had the opportunity to enjoy a week-long scheme at the very studio where it was recorded – and it’s cemented her ambition to embark on a career as a sound technician.
Ellyn Mosley, who’s in her third year of Music and Sound Production, found out about the opportunity to visit Rockfield Studios in Wales via her lecturer,  Mr Ben Payne

Naturally into the technical side of music production, she applied and was accepted to go alongside a handful of other students from around the UK.
During her week at the studios, Ellyn recorded two bands – with genres ranging from Ukrainian rock to Cornish folk.
And having the opportunity to see the piano where Freddie Mercury played the iconic song cemented how much she wants to pursue a career in the industry.

I’ve always loved music and played the oboe at school, but during school shows and productions I found the backstage side of things more enjoyable.

There weren’t many unis that did sound production, but I knew it had to be Plymouth when I came here for an open day.
Since being here, I’ve loved the opportunities to see so many sides of the industry and the trip to Rockfield has brought to life a lot of what I learned in the classroom, as well as giving me new skills, contacts and experience. Seeing THAT piano was just surreal!
Most of all it’s given me some confidence that in a competitive industry, I really can do it.

We always want the very best for our students and I’m delighted that Ellyn was able to take up the opportunity at Rockfield.

It’s an iconic place where an iconic song was recorded, and fantastic for her to see how everything works behind the scenes.
Our Music and Sound Production course blends creativity with industry-leading technology, empowering students to explore, innovate, and prepare for a dynamic career.
The hands-on experience and professional mentoring from industry leaders is something we’re really proud of, so I’ve no doubt that Ellyn and all of our students have a bright future ahead.
