Students from the University of Plymouth are planning to build their own race car, with ambitions to race at one of the most famous racetracks in the world.
The team from UoP Racing is currently working to design a car for the Formula Student competition at Silverstone this summer and build one for the 2025 competition the following year.
The annual event welcomes teams from universities across the world, with elements of business acumen and communication assessed in addition to the quality and speed of the vehicle they’ve built.
It’s the team’s second year entering the concept class, and they are utilising the University’s new Babbage Building – containing state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for design and engineering – to make the dream a reality.

With hopes of progression to the IC Class in the 2025 competition, where they would race against others, the team is working hard to prepare for the next competition.
The team comprises students from across disciplines, including humanities and business as well as engineering. With ambition, skill and camaraderie on their side, they are also looking for commercial sponsors to help get them even further.

Our team represents the epitome of hands-on learning as we apply our classroom knowledge to the realm of real-world engineering challenges.

We’re always looking for collaboration and sponsorship opportunities to give ourselves the best chance possible of competing.
From aerodynamics and suspension design to data analysis, we delve into every facet of the car's creation. It’s been great to use the new computing facilities as our base for weekly meetings and we look forward to using the other facilities in the new Babbage Building to get our designs underway.

I love watching Formula One, to the point where I’m actually doing my dissertation about women in motorsport.

The UoP Racing Society is for anyone who loves the sport and the concept, and there are opportunities to get involved in all aspects of the Formula Student competition.
I’ve loved leading the work that influences the public perception of UoP Racing, from the creative visuals to the wording and storytelling. It’s a great opportunity and one I hope the team will build on as we grow.

It's a great chance for people from all university courses to get involved in such a unique project.

Whether you're building the car, designing graphics or part of the business team, there's a valuable role for everyone. As such a new team, we're excited to see what happens next.
